Hand ligaments and tendons, artwork

Hand bones and cartilage. Artwork of the bones and cartilage (white, ends of bones) of the hand and the wrist joint from the rear (dorsal) side. There are eight wrist (carpal) bones: scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform (bottom); trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate (top). The carpal bones articulate with the bones of the forearm, the ulna (bottom left) and the radius (bottom right) to form the wrist joint. From the carpal bones the five metacarpals of the back of the hand join to the phalanges, the finger bones. The thumb (left) has two phalanges, while the fingers have three. EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate ligaments and tendons of the hand, providing a unique perspective on its anatomy. The print features the bones and cartilage of the hand and wrist joint from a dorsal view, highlighting their delicate structure. Eight carpal bones are beautifully illustrated, including the scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform at the bottom; and trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate at the top. These carpal bones form a vital connection between the forearm's ulna and radius to create the wrist joint. From these carpal bones extend five metacarpals that join with phalanges - finger bones - forming our hands' framework. Notably, while each finger possesses three phalanges contributing to its flexibility and dexterity; our thumb stands out with only two phalanges. The image provides an exceptional visual representation of normal hand anatomy in stunning detail against a white background. It serves as an invaluable resource for studying biological structures related to limb function or understanding various joints like interphalangeal joints or carpometacarpal joints. D & L GRAPHICS / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY has skillfully captured this scientific illustration that not only educates but also fascinates viewers with its artistic portrayal of human biology.
