EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean Riolan the Younger, a prominent French anatomist of the 17th century. The monochrome illustration depicts Riolan in a dignified manner, with Latin text surrounding his portrait providing essential details about his life and achievements. As a Parisian medical doctor and Regius Professor, Riolan held esteemed positions within the field of medicine. However, despite being the dean of the Paris Faculty of Medicine, he did not attain the same level of prominence as his father. Riolan's traditionalist approach to anatomy is highlighted by his adherence to Galen's theories from the 2nd century. This engraving by Gilles Rousselet beautifully captures both Riolan's historical significance and his opposition to William Harvey's groundbreaking ideas during their shared era. The artwork itself is an invaluable piece from the library of the Paris Faculty of Medicine, symbolizing its rich history and contribution to medical knowledge. This print serves as a testament to Riolan's contributions as an anatomist and physician while also shedding light on France's significant role in European medical advancements during this period. Overall, this image offers viewers a glimpse into an important chapter in scientific history—a time when contrasting ideologies clashed amidst groundbreaking discoveries—making it an intriguing addition for those interested in biology, medicine, or historical figures who have shaped our understanding of human anatomy.
