Gervais Raoul Lufbery (1885-1918), French World War I pilot. Lufbery, a French and US citizen, was initially a mechanic to the French aviation pioneer Marc Pourpe (1887-1914). When Pourpe was killed in the early months of the war, Lufbery trained as a pilot himself. He served in the French Air Service (Aeronautique Militaire) flying Nieuport fighters. By 1916 he had joined a US volunteer effort called the Lafayette Escadrille. By 1918, he was commander of the US 94th Aero Squadron. The three medals he is wearing here are (left to right): Legion of Honour, Medaille Militaire, Croix de Guerre. Photographed between 1916 and Lufberys death in combat in 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the remarkable Raoul Lufbery, a French World War I pilot whose legacy continues to inspire. Born in 1885, Lufbery began his aviation journey as a mechanic for the renowned French pioneer Marc Pourpe. Tragically, Pourpe lost his life during the early months of the war, prompting Lufbery to undergo pilot training himself. Determined and courageous, Lufbery joined the French Air Service (Aeronautique Militaire) where he fearlessly flew Nieuport fighters. In 1916, he became part of an esteemed group known as the Lafayette Escadrille - American volunteers who fought alongside their French allies. By 1918, he had risen through the ranks to become commander of the prestigious US 94th Aero Squadron. In this striking portrait from between 1916 and his untimely death in combat in 1918, we see Lufbery proudly adorned with three distinguished medals: Legion of Honour, Medaille Militaire, and Croix de Guerre. These accolades symbolize his exceptional bravery and unwavering commitment to defending freedom. Lufbery's contribution to aerial combat during World War I was immeasurable. As a skilled fighter pilot hailing from both France and America, he exemplified heroism on multiple fronts. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of not only his personal sacrifice but also that of countless others who fought valiantly during this tumultuous period in history. Preserved by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY with meticulous care and attention to detail, this image transports us back in time - allowing us to pay homage to one man's extraordinary dedication amidst the chaos of war.
