Rossel petrol car, 1897

Rossel petrol car. 19th-century artwork of a four-seater Rossel petrol car. The steering mechanism is at centre, with headlights at right. There have been several automobile companies and manufacturers in France named Rossel. This petrol car was made by the company founded by Edouard Rossel in Lille, France, in the 1890s. Its engines were based on, or under license from, the German automobile manufacturer Daimler. Rossels company ceased manufacturing a few years after it was founded. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Rossel petrol car, a remarkable piece of engineering from the late 19th century. The artwork depicts a four-seater vehicle with its steering mechanism prominently placed at the center, while headlights illuminate the path ahead on the right side. This particular automobile was manufactured by Edouard Rossel's company in Lille, France during the 1890s. The Rossel petrol car stands as a testament to technological advancements of its time, as it utilized engines based on or licensed from renowned German manufacturer Daimler. However, despite its promising beginnings, Rossel's venture into automobile manufacturing was short-lived and ceased operations just a few years after its establishment. As we gaze upon this historical illustration, we are transported back to an era when automobiles were still in their infancy. It serves as a reminder of how far transportation technology has come since then and highlights France's contribution to automotive history. This monochrome artwork is sourced from Jules-Louis Breton's first volume (1897) of La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle – his scientific and industrial review publication. Its inclusion in Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate not only the beauty of this vintage vehicle but also gain insight into early French engineering prowess.
