Female southern right whale (Eubalaena australis) and her albino calf. The southern right whale gained its name as it was the right whale to hunt. Females breed once every three years, giving birth in the temperate winter breeding grounds after a gestation of 12 months. The calf is born tail first and measures up to 6 metres in length. A fully grown adult can grow up to 17m in length and weigh over 100 tonnes. The newborn calf is nursed on its mothers milk and weaned at about a year. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable bond between a female southern right whale and her rare albino calf. The Southern right whale, named for being the "right" target during hunting times, is known for its impressive size and weight. Females of this species breed once every three years and give birth to their calves in winter breeding grounds after a year-long gestation period. The newborn calf enters the world tail first, measuring up to an astonishing 6 meters in length. As it grows, an adult southern right whale can reach lengths of up to 17 meters and weigh over 100 tonnes. This awe-inspiring photograph was taken in the De Hoop Marine Protected Area located in Western Cape, South Africa. The image captures the maternal care provided by the mother as she nurses her young on her milk until weaning occurs at approximately one year old. The stunning aerial perspective allows us to appreciate not only the beauty of these magnificent creatures but also their natural habitat within the vast Atlantic Ocean. Albinism adds another layer of uniqueness to this already extraordinary sighting. The pure white coloration stands out against the deep blue waters, making this duo even more enchanting. This photograph serves as a testament to both nature's diversity and our responsibility to protect these incredible marine mammals that grace our oceans with their presence.
