Between September 1933 and March 1934, American artist Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) traveled to Germany. First landing in Hamburg, he wended his way south to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a village in the Bavarian Alps, producing works that captured the spare geometries of the surrounding mountains. In the 21 rarely exhibited silverpoint drawings, Hartley rendered the immense rock Alps with delicate lines, transforming them into wispy, airy abstractions that he called " skeletons." ); eHuntington Art Collections; Gift of Michael St. Clair; American, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Mountain Landscape with Buildings and Trees in Foreground, 1933" by Marsden Hartley takes us on a journey to the picturesque Bavarian Alps. The silverpoint on paper technique used by the American artist beautifully captures the essence of this breathtaking landscape. In this particular artwork, Hartley skillfully depicts the rugged mountains towering over quaint buildings nestled amidst lush trees. The delicate lines he employs create an ethereal quality, transforming the solid rock formations into wispy abstractions that he refers to as "skeletons". This unique interpretation adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to the scene. The inscription at the lower right corner reveals that these structures are known as "The Two Waxensteins" located in Garmisch. It is fascinating to imagine Hartley standing before this awe-inspiring view, capturing its grandeur with his skilled hand. This rare piece from Hartley's travels in Germany showcases his ability to capture both natural beauty and architectural elements within one composition. The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino now house this remarkable artwork as part of their collection. As we gaze upon this print, we can almost feel ourselves transported to those majestic mountains, surrounded by nature's splendor. It serves as a reminder of how art has the power to transport us beyond our physical boundaries and immerse us in different worlds.
