EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph from 1938, we are granted a rare glimpse into the private world of the Sweeny family, featuring the glamorous Mr and Mrs Charles Sweeny and their newborn baby daughter, Frances. The image on the left captures an intimate moment at home, with Mr Sweeny playfully interacting with his young family, while on the right, a professional photograph by Jane Haydon showcases the elegant and poised Mrs Sweeny, formerly Miss Margaret Whigham, cradling their baby girl. Margaret Whigham, a deb of the year, society beauty, and media darling, had married the American golfer Charles Sweeny in 1935. Their union was a high-profile society event, with extensive media coverage. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 1947. In this series of photographs, we see a different side to the public personas of the Sweenys, revealing the tender and loving bond between husband, wife, and their newborn child. The images offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of these famous figures, who would later make headlines for different reasons. Frances, the baby girl in the photographs, would grow up to become Frances Manners, Duchess of Rutland, and her mother, Margaret, would become the Duchess of Argyll. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and multifaceted lives of these historical figures, offering a glimpse into their personal lives beyond the public eye.
