Fay Taylour, Speedways Queen of the cinders, hopes to return to the saddle. Frank Arnold
Fay Taylour, Speedways Queen of the cinders, hopes to return to the saddle. Frank Arnold, West Hams team manager, has invited her to take part in a trial and the public may later see her give demonstration rides. The ban on women riders still keeps her from competing against men. She was a champion in 1929 but had to retire when the ACU banned women riders. She held the track record at Wembley in 1929, broke the record for a cross-country run in a car from Calcutta to Karachi in 1934; made a 24 hour speedboat record in South Africa in 1939, as well as driving midget cars on tracks in Johannesburg.
Picture shows: Fay at speed. Here she has a practice run on West Hams speedway track to get the feel of the motorcycle which she states she hasn t ridden since 1931.
