Anne, Queen of Great Britain, (19th century). Artist: J Cochran
Anne, Queen of Great Britain, (19th century). Anne (1665-1714) was the daughter of James II, deposed by William of Orange in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The last Stuart monarch, she came to the throne after the death of William in 1702, and became the first monarch of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland after the signing of the Act of Union in 1707. Her reign saw a decline of the power of the crown in favour of that of ministers as well as the development of a two party system of politics. Her inability to produce an heir precipitated a succession crisis, with parliament passing legislation to hand the crown to the House of Hanover in order to prevent the Catholic Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart, from claiming the throne

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Anne, Queen of Great Britain, during the 19th century. The artist behind this remarkable piece is J Cochran. Anne, born in 1665 as the daughter of James II, faced a tumultuous period in British history known as the Glorious Revolution of 1688 when her father was deposed by William of Orange. As the last monarch from the Stuart dynasty, Anne ascended to the throne after William's death in 1702. Her reign marked an era of significant changes for Great Britain and Ireland. With the signing of the Act of Union in 1707, she became not only Queen but also the first ruler of both nations. Anne's rule witnessed a shift in power dynamics with ministers gaining more influence while she faced challenges due to her inability to produce an heir. This led Parliament to pass legislation ensuring that upon her death, the crown would pass to the House of Hanover instead of allowing James Francis Edward Stuart (the Catholic Old Pretender) to claim it. Queen Anne's portrait exudes regal elegance as she dons a stunning dress befitting her status. This engraving beautifully captures her likeness and serves as a reminder not only of her reign but also highlights key historical developments such as political parties' emergence and diminishing royal authority. J Cochran skillfully immortalizes Queen Anne through this monochrome masterpiece that showcases both her grace and significance within British history.
