The Country House Season 1915 by Charles Robinson, WW1
House party at Castle Bareacres coming down to dinner during the munitions season. A pastiche on the traditional, upper class house party of the pre-war era, showing aristocratic visitors instead dressed in work clothes and leaving the factory floor to descend down a grand staircase for dinner. Barrels of cordite, picric acid and other explosive material can be seen pilled up by a suit of armour. The bewigged footman is temporarily interrupted from war work too. He wears a War Service badge and hides a saw behind his back. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled 'The Country House Season 1915' by Charles Robinson, captures a unique and humorous scene during the munitions era of World War I. Instead of the traditional upper-class house party of the pre-war era, this image shows aristocratic visitors dressed in work clothes, momentarily pausing their factory duties to descend the grand staircase of Castle Bareacres for dinner. The grandeur of the castle's interior is juxtaposed with the raw reality of the war effort, as barrels of cordite, picric acid, and other explosive materials are piled up nearby. Even the bewigged footman, temporarily diverted from his war work, wears a War Service badge and hides a saw behind his back. This lampoon of the past is a poignant reminder of the unexpected ways in which the war disrupted the leisurely pursuits of the upper classes. The image, dated 1915, offers a humorous and humorous commentary on the societal classes and their adaptation to the new wartime realities. This photograph is an invaluable historical record of the unique challenges and adaptations during the munitions season of World War I.
