EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph by Adolf Glitsch, based on an illustration by Ernst Haeckel from his seminal work "Art Forms in Nature" (Kunstformen der Natur), showcases an intriguing array of Cirripedia or barnacles. Barnacles are a diverse group of crustaceans, characterized by their calcified shells that provide them with a stable attachment to various substrates. Here, we find an impressive assemblage of species, each exhibiting unique morphologies and adaptations. The image begins with the Goose barnacle, Lepas anatifera (1), and the Long-ear barnacle, Conchoderma auritum (2), both attached to buoyant objects. The Buoy barnacle, Lepas fascicularis (3), is also depicted, with its distinctive fan-like appendages. The Humpback whale barnacle, Coronula diadema (9, 10), and the Coronula reginae (11), are shown in their adult forms, clinging to the whale's body. A variety of sessile barnacles are also represented, including the Six-plated barnacle, Chthamalus antennatus (12), the Surf barnacle, Catomerus polymerus (13), and the Octomeris angulosa (14). The crab barnacle, Sacculina carcini (15), is shown parasitizing a littoral crab, Carcinus maenas. Two Arcoscalpellum species, Arcoscalpellum michelottianum (5, 6) and Arcoscalpellum vitreum (7, 8), are displayed, with their delicate, translucent shells and elongated, slender legs. This stunning illustration not only highlights the beauty and diversity of barnacles but also underscores their intricate relationships with their environments and other marine organisms.
