Xylography painted on canvas. by Tibetan School (19th century); (add.info.: The descent from the sky of the Thirty-three gods in Samkashya. Thangka from a sequel devoted to the main episodes of the life of the Buddha. East Tibet, second half of the 19th century. Xylography painted on canvas. After the miraculous episode of Shravasti, the Buddha disappeared during the three months of a rainy season. The texts report that it was during this period that he went to heaven of the thirty-three gods (trayastrimha) in order to teach doctrine there. His return to Earth is particularly well staged: during the full moon of Ashvina (September-October), accompanied by the gods Brahma and Shakra, the Blessed returned to our world in the city of Samkashya using a divine staircase made of crystal, gold and silver. On the right: Mount Meru. On the top right: the Buddha teaching in heaven of the thirty-three gods, at the top of Mount Meru. At the top: the monk Maudgalyayana flies to the sky of the thirty-three gods to ask the Buddha to return to Earth. In the center: the descent to Samkashya.); Photo eSylvain Collet; Tibetan, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring scene of "The descent from the sky of the Thirty-three gods in Samkashya". Created by the Tibetan School in the second half of the 19th century, this xylography painted on canvas thangka is a testament to their artistic mastery. The image depicts a significant episode in the life of Buddha. After disappearing for three months during a rainy season, he returned to Earth accompanied by Brahma and Shakra, two prominent gods. The divine staircase made of crystal, gold, and silver serves as his pathway back to our world. Mount Meru stands majestically on the right side while at its peak, Buddha can be seen teaching in heaven alongside thirty-three gods. Intriguingly, at the center of this composition is Maudgalyayana - a monk who flies up to plead with Buddha for his return. This adds an element of urgency and devotion to an already extraordinary event. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring this ancient tale to life, allowing viewers to immerse themselves in its spiritual significance. It is through art like this that we gain insight into different cultures' beliefs and traditions. Captured beautifully by Sylvain Collet's lens, this print preserves not only the visual splendor but also invites contemplation about faith and transcendence across time and space.
