Maharaja Jagat Singh Hunting, 1734-1751. Creator: Unknown
Maharaja Jagat Singh Hunting, 1734-1751. One of the favorite pastimes of the Rajputana nobility was hunting, a subject frequently depicted in secular painting in Rajasthan. Often much larger than other Indian paintings, hunting scenes glorified the pleasures and splendors of these stately affairs. This colourful painting depicts a royal hunt conducted by the Maharaja Jagat Singh of Udaipur. An inscription on the reverse side of the painting mentions the Maharajas name along with the hunting partys other participants, including the Maharajas brother. The hunt takes place in a detailed landscape of hills and varied vegetation. The animals (tiger, bear, wild boar, deer, stag, and antelope) are rounded up and diverted by servants (who shoot firecrackers) toward the shooting box at the center of the composition, where the royal members of the hunting party await their prey. Another group of servants with dogs approaches from the opposite direction to cut off the animals route of escape. Some beasts are already killed or wounded, while others are trying desperately to run for their lives. The painting is signed on the reverse by the artist--a rare occurrence in Indian painting. The name reads " Jugarsi, son of Jiva."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant print captures the essence of a royal hunt conducted by Maharaja Jagat Singh of Udaipur in the years 1734-1751. Hunting was a beloved pastime for the Rajputana nobility, and this painting beautifully depicts their opulent and grand affairs. The scene unfolds in a detailed landscape adorned with hills and lush vegetation. The animals, including tigers, bears, wild boars, deer, stags, and antelopes are skillfully rounded up and diverted towards the shooting box at the center of the composition. Servants strategically shoot firecrackers to guide them while another group approaches with dogs to cut off any possible escape routes. Some beasts have already fallen victim to their hunters' prowess while others desperately attempt to flee for their lives. What makes this painting even more remarkable is its rare signature on the reverse side by artist Jugarsi, son of Jiva. This personal touch adds an extra layer of authenticity and significance to this artwork. As one gazes upon this colorful masterpiece depicting an age-old tradition cherished by royalty, it becomes evident why hunting scenes were frequently depicted in secular paintings across Rajasthan. They served as visual celebrations that glorified both the pleasures and splendors associated with these majestic events. This print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate not only the artistic talent behind such creations but also provides a glimpse into a world where hunting was not merely a sport but an integral part of noble life during that era.
