EDITORS COMMENTS
Conrad Gessner, also known as Conrad Gesner or Conradus Gesnerus (1516-1565), was a prominent Swiss naturalist, physician, and scholar of the Renaissance period. This monochrome engraving, titled "Medeus & Philosophus" and printed in Isis, volume 22, plate 4, showcases a portrait of Gessner in his scholarly attire. Born in Zurich, Gessner was a prolific writer, producing works on a wide range of subjects, including botany, zoology, and antiquities. He is considered one of the founders of modern botany, having described over 1,000 plant species, many of which were new to science at the time. Gessner's botanical work was groundbreaking, as he was one of the first to use the Linnaean system of binomial nomenclature, which is still used today. He also made significant contributions to the classification of angiosperms, specifically the dicotyledons, eudicots, and asterids. The inscription on the print reads "Conradus Gesnerus Medeus & Philosophus," reflecting Gessner's dual roles as a physician and scholar. The image of a flowering plant, likely a Gesneria, in the background further emphasizes his botanical accomplishments. Gessner's impact on the scientific community was immense, and his works continue to be studied and referenced by scholars today. This engraving is a testament to his enduring legacy as a pioneering naturalist and intellectual figure of the 16th century.
