Duchess of Albany with Charles Edward
Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont, Duchess of Albany with her son, Prince Charles Edward of Albany (1884-1954). Charlie was born posthumously. His father, Prince Leopold, who suffered from haemophilia, had travelled to Cannes in February 1884 to ease joint pain, a common symptom. On 27 March he slipped and fell in the Yacht Club in Cannes, injuring his knee and he died in the early hours of the next morning, apparently from the combined effects of morphine and claret. The news was a terrible shock to all the family, but especially Helen, who gave birth to Charlie on 19 July

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont, Duchess of Albany, tenderly cradles her newborn son, Prince Charles Edward of Albany, in the aftermath of a profound personal tragedy. Born on July 19, 1884, Charlie was the posthumous child of his father, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, who had died just three months earlier. Leopold, who suffered from haemophilia, had travelled to Cannes in February to ease his joint pain, a common symptom of the condition. However, on March 27, he slipped and fell in the Yacht Club, injuring his knee. Despite medical attention, he died in the early hours of the following morning, apparently from the combined effects of morphine and claret. The news of Leopold's death was a terrible shock to Helena and the rest of the family. She gave birth to Charlie just over three months later, a bittersweet reminder of the loss of her husband. In this image, taken some time after the birth, Helena gazes down at her son with a mixture of love and sorrow, her expression reflecting the deep emotional turmoil she must have felt. The photograph is a poignant reminder of the human capacity for resilience and the enduring bond between a mother and her child. Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont (1861-1922) was the eldest daughter of Frederick II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. She married Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, in 1882, and they had four children together before Leopold's untimely death. Charlie was their only son to survive infancy. He went on to serve in the British Army during World War I and later became the 16th Earl of Wessex. He died in 1954, at the age of 70.
