EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, created by Lassus after an illustration by A. Bessin, showcases two exquisite and intriguingly named mushrooms: the Blackening Brittlegill (Russula nigricans) and the Charcoal Burner (Russula cyanoxantha). The image, taken from Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide to mushrooms from France, Switzerland, and Belgium, published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910, is a testament to the rich biodiversity of the fungal kingdom during this era. The Blackening Brittlegill, with its inky-black cap and white warts, is a striking example of the Russula genus. Its cap, which can reach up to 10 centimeters in diameter, turns black when bruised or cut, hence its name. The Charcoal Burner, on the other hand, boasts a distinctive, charcoal-gray cap with a white, net-like veil that covers the cap when young, turning brown as it matures. The stem of this mushroom is white and fibrous, and it grows to a height of around 8 centimeters. These mushrooms, like many others, have long fascinated mycologists and naturalists due to their unique appearances and intriguing characteristics. The artful depiction of these fungi in this chromolithograph not only highlights their beauty but also serves as a valuable record of their discovery and documentation during a time when the study of mycology was in its infancy. As we marvel at this image, we are reminded of the importance of preserving and documenting the natural world, and the ongoing fascination that fungi continue to hold for scientists, artists, and nature enthusiasts alike.
