EDITORS COMMENTS
The Worshiping of the Beast," scene 15 from the Apocalypse of Angers tapestry series, is a striking representation of Nicolas Bataille's interpretation of the apocalyptic text from the Book of Revelation. Commissioned by Louis I, Duke of Anjou in the late 14th century, this tapestry is one of 11 surviving scenes from the series, housed in Angers Castle in Maine-et-Loire, France. The scene depicts the Beast, a monstrous figure with the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and the head and tail of a serpent, receiving the adoration of a multitude of people. The Beast stands atop a mountain of skulls, symbolizing the destruction and death brought about by the apocalypse. The crowd before him is a mix of humans, some in royal attire, and others in simple clothing, all bowing in submission to the Beast. The tapestry, created after cartons attributed to Jean de Bruges, is an excellent example of International Gothic art. The intricate details, vibrant colors, and the use of horizontal composition all contribute to the dynamic and engaging visual narrative. The Western artistic tradition during the medieval period and the Middle Ages was rich in textiles and tapestries, which served not only as decorative elements but also as important storytelling tools. The Apocalypse of Angers series is a testament to this tradition and continues to captivate audiences with its intricate designs and powerful symbolism. The Worshiping of the Beast tapestry is a fascinating glimpse into the artistic and religious sensibilities of the late medieval period. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of the apocalyptic narrative and the role that art played in shaping the cultural and spiritual landscape of the time.
