Leonardos Ornithopter
Leonardos drawing of an ornithopter (aircraft that operates by flapping its wings). From 1485 Leonardo studied the flight of birds. He realised that humans are too heavy to fly by means of wings attached to their arms. He therefore went on to propose and sketch this ornithopter. The aviator lies prone on the platform of the machine and operates two large membranous wings by means of cords and levers so that they move through the air. Codex Atlanticus

15th Century Drawing Flying Machine Leonardo Leonardo Da Vinci Pulleys Sketch 1485 Codex Atlanticus Flapping Wings
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Leonardo da Vinci's visionary creation, the Ornithopter. Dating back to 1485, this remarkable drawing reflects Leonardo's extensive study of bird flight and his determination to unlock the secrets of human aviation. Recognizing that humans are too heavy to fly with wings attached to their arms, he ingeniously proposed an alternative solution - a man-operated flying machine. In this sketch from the Codex Atlanticus, we witness the brilliance of Leonardo's design. The aviator lies prone on a sturdy platform while manipulating two large membranous wings through a complex system of cords and levers. Inspired by nature itself, these flapping wings mimic the graceful motion observed in birds soaring through the sky. Leonardo's ornithopter represents not only his unparalleled creativity but also his profound understanding of mechanics and engineering principles. By incorporating pulleys and intricate mechanisms into his invention, he sought to replicate the awe-inspiring phenomenon of flight. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of Leonardo da Vinci's enduring legacy as both an artist and a scientific pioneer. His unwavering curiosity pushed boundaries and challenged conventional wisdom, leaving behind a wealth of knowledge for generations to come. This image serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our unrelenting pursuit of conquering new frontiers in science and technology.
