Leaf from a Book of Hours: Ape Hunting Wild Boars (recto) and Ape Fishing (verso), c
Leaf from a Book of Hours: Ape Hunting Wild Boars (recto) and Ape Fishing (verso), c. 1500-1510. The litany of the saints is among the most ancient and emotional Christian liturgical texts, dating in the West to at least the AD 400s. In a book of hours, the litanies is a list of saints names expressed in hierarchical order and individual rank. These names were recited rhythmically as invocations, followed each time by Ora pro nobis (Pray for us). In this way, saints were called upon by sinners seeking forgiveness and salvation. The bas-de-page (lower margin), features an ape hunting wild boars: both animals were symbolic of vice and lust. Perhaps deriving from a fable, the scene could be amusing or diversionary, but it was likely instructive for the medieval owner of the book

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Book of Hours, specifically depicting the fascinating juxtaposition of Ape Hunting Wild Boars (recto) and Ape Fishing (verso), created around 1500-1510. The Book of Hours is renowned for its inclusion of the litany of the saints, an ancient Christian text that evokes deep emotions. Dating back to at least the AD 400s, this liturgical composition lists saints' names in hierarchical order and individual rank. Sinners seeking forgiveness and salvation would rhythmically recite these names as invocations followed by "Ora pro nobis" (Pray for us). Intriguingly, this particular leaf features a bas-de-page illustration in its lower margin, portraying an ape engaging in wild boar hunting - both animals symbolizing vice and lust. While this scene may appear amusing or diversionary on the surface, it likely held instructive value for the medieval owner of the book. Created using ink, tempera, and liquid gold on vellum during France's 16th century period, this manuscript originated from either Paris or Rouen. Currently housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art with unknown ownership history beyond Heritage Art/Heritage Images who captured this stunning image without any commercial use intentions. This remarkable print invites viewers to delve into centuries-old religious practices while marveling at intricate artistic craftsmanship preserved through time.
