EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "From the profound abyss, behind the lid of a great monument we stood retired, c1890" transports us to a moment in time when Dante Alighieri and the Roman poet Virgil find themselves seeking refuge amidst craggy rocks. The image is an illustration from "The Vision of Hell" (Inferno), which is part of Dante's renowned literary masterpiece, "The Divine Comedy". Published numerous times since its creation in the 14th century, this particular edition was published in the late 19th century and features exquisite illustrations by Gustave Dore. In this scene, Dore skillfully captures the tension as Dante and Virgil attempt to shield themselves from a repulsive stench emanating from below. As we gaze upon this monochrome engraving, we are reminded of the immense talent possessed by both Dore and Dante Alighieri. The intricate details within each rock formation showcase Dore's architectural prowess while also emphasizing the treacherous nature of their surroundings. Through this powerful image, we are transported into Dante's imaginary journey through Hell as he navigates his way towards Purgatory and eventually Heaven. It serves as a testament to both literature's ability to transcend time and art's capacity to bring words to life.
