EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the early stages of construction at the Doddington Estate in Battersea, Wandsworth, Greater London. The view looks north-east over the estate, showcasing its impressive tower blocks of flats against a backdrop that includes the iconic Battersea Power Station in the distance. Designed by architects Emberton, Tardrew & Partners, this housing estate was built between 1967 and 1971 by Laing for Wandsworth London Borough Council. A remarkable feature of this project is the utilization of Laing's innovative 12M Jespersen building system. This method involved prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels produced at their concrete factory in Andover. The image reveals a bustling construction site with cranes towering above as workers diligently bring this vision to life. The gasometer stands tall nearby, adding an industrial charm to the scene. It serves as a reminder of how urban landscapes evolve over time. This photograph not only showcases architectural history but also provides insight into social housing development during the 1960s. The Doddington Estate represents an era when modernist design principles were embraced to create functional yet aesthetically pleasing living spaces for residents. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this print offers viewers a glimpse into London's past while highlighting significant milestones in urban planning and construction techniques employed during that period.
