Craigshill, Livingston, West Lothian, SCOTLAND. Two surveyors at work on a Jespersen construction compound, probably at the Craigshill development in Livingston, with a crane in the background unloading a pallet from a trailer.
In 1963, John Laing and Son Ltd bought the rights to the Danish industrialised building system known as Jespersen (sometimes referred to as Jesperson). The company built factories in Scotland, Hampshire and Lancashire producing Jespersen prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels, allowing the building of housing to be rationalised, saving time and money. The location of this construction compound is uncertain, but it may have been at Craigshill in Livingston where there was a Jesperson Factory and a housing scheme built using the 12M Jespersen System

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Historic England showcases the diligent work of two surveyors at a Jespersen construction compound in Craigshill, Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. The year was 1963 when John Laing and Son Ltd acquired the rights to the innovative Danish industrialized building system known as Jespersen. With factories established in Scotland, Hampshire, and Lancashire, this system enabled the production of prefabricated parts and precast concrete panels for efficient housing construction. In this particular image, we witness the surveyors meticulously examining their surroundings with a theodolite while standing amidst bustling activity. A towering crane looms in the background as it carefully unloads a pallet from a trailer. This snapshot offers a glimpse into an era where rationalizing building processes was paramount to saving both time and money. Although uncertain about its exact location, it is plausible that this construction compound existed within Craigshill itself—a site that housed both a Jesperson Factory and an ambitious housing scheme built using the 12M Jespersen System during the 1960s. Through this remarkable photograph captured by A© Historic England Archive, we are transported back in time to witness not only skilled professionals carrying out their duties but also an industry on the cusp of revolutionizing traditional building practices.
