1030 1101 11th Bruno Carthusian Centuries Cologne Confessor Founder Habit Hermit Miter Mitre Monk Mystic Order
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative engraving from the 17th or 18th century, we find the venerable figure of Saint Bruno of Cologne (circa 1030-1101), the illustrious founder of the Carthusian Order. Born in Cologne, Germany, around the year 1030, Bruno was initially educated in the liberal arts and later pursued a career in the Church. However, he yearned for a more contemplative life and, inspired by the writings of John Cassian, sought solitude and prayer in the forests of the Rhine Valley. Bruno's dedication to the spiritual life soon attracted followers, and together they formed a community of hermits, living in individual cells while sharing a common refectory and church. This community, which came to be known as the Carthusian Order, was founded in 1084 and became renowned for its rigorous observance of the Rule of Saint Benedict and its emphasis on contemplative prayer and penance. In this image, Saint Bruno is depicted as an elderly man, dressed in the Carthusian habit of a white tunic and scapular, with a hooded cloak and a miter or mitre (a liturgical headdress) resting on his knees. He holds a book in his left hand, symbolizing his role as a confessor and teacher, while his right hand is raised in blessing. The serene expression on his face and the tranquil setting of the forest behind him underscore his reputation as a mystic and holy man. As the founder of the Carthusian Order, Saint Bruno left an indelible mark on the history of Christianity during the Middle Ages. His legacy continues to inspire generations of monks and nuns who seek to follow in his footsteps and deepen their spiritual lives through prayer, penance, and solitude.
