Mstislav Keldysh, Russian physicist
Mstislav Keldysh (1911-1978), Russian mathematician and physicist. Keldysh spent the inter-war years working on better aerodynamical models for aircraft, producing important advances in the knowledge of compressible air flows. After the Second World War he became involved in rockets and space flight, playing a leading role in the development of the first Soviet missile and in the planning of space travel. In recognition of his achievements he was made president of the USSR Academy of Sciences

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of Mstislav Keldysh, a renowned Russian physicist and mathematician. Born in 1911, Keldysh dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of science during a time of great turmoil and technological advancements. During the inter-war years, he delved into the realm of aerodynamics, revolutionizing our understanding of compressible air flows for aircraft. His groundbreaking work paved the way for safer and more efficient aviation practices. However, it was after World War II that Keldysh truly left an indelible mark on history. Immersed in rocketry and space exploration, he played a pivotal role in developing Soviet missiles and shaping plans for space travel. Such contributions earned him prestigious recognition as president of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In this monochrome portrait captured in the fifties, we witness Keldysh's intellectual prowess emanating from his eyes – a testament to his unwavering dedication to scientific progress. As a Caucasian man with white hair adorning his distinguished features, he exudes wisdom accumulated through decades spent at the forefront of mathematical and physical research. Mstislav Keldysh's legacy lives on as an inspiration to future generations exploring fluid mechanics, physics, rocket science, and beyond. This photograph serves as both a tribute to his remarkable achievements and a reminder that human ingenuity knows no bounds when driven by passion for knowledge.
