Roman mosaic, Ostia Antica
Roman mosaic in Ostia Antica. Mosaic showing Nereids (sea nymphs, lower left and lower right), Hippocampi (small seahorses, top left and top right) and Tritons (sea gods with fish tails, upper centre). The sea god Neptune can be seen with four horses at centre. The mosaic was built in about 133 AD by order of the Roman emperor Hadrian. It is located at the Baths of Neptune in Ostia Antica, an ancient Roman seaport built at the mouth of the Tiber River near Rome, Italy. The port was founded by the Roman king Ancus Marcius in about 620 BC and was used to import grain and other essentials for the city of Rome
