The Mad Hatter and the Hare, 1953. Creator: Shirley Markham
The Mad Hatter and the Hare, 1953. Illustration for " Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Mad Hatter and the Hare, 1953" is a testament to the incredible talent of creator Shirley Markham. Inspired by Lewis Carroll's iconic story "Alice in Wonderland" this illustration showcases Markham's unique style and artistic prowess. Markham, who studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London under renowned artist Mervyn Peake, was greatly influenced by British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden. Her love for classical architecture also shines through her work, as she spent time sketching buildings in Rome during her travels. Despite her promising career as a graphic designer and illustrator producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus, and programmes; societal expectations forced Markham to give up her profession after getting married in 1957. Middle-class women were often expected to focus solely on raising children and managing household responsibilities during that era. Sadly, due to a lack of confidence in herself as an artist following this hiatus from illustration; Markham's remarkable portfolio remained hidden away in the family attic for many years. However, we are fortunate enough now to have the opportunity to appreciate her exceptional work as it is published here for the first time. "The Mad Hatter and the Hare" serves as a poignant reminder of not only Markham's immense talent but also sheds light on the challenges faced by women artists during that period.
