EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor cartoon card features Enver Pasha (1881-1922), a young, charismatic Turkish military and political leader who played a pivotal role in the Young Turk Revolution. As a member of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), Enver was instrumental in restoring the 1876 Constitution in 1908 and deposing Sultan Abdulhamid II the following year. Before leading a radical coup in Albania in 1913, Enver served as a military attaché in Berlin. One of the ruling triumvirate in the ensuing CUP dictatorship, he led the recapture of Edirne in 1913 and later involved Turkey in World War I. In this vibrant watercolor, Enver Pasha is depicted wearing a fez and a red pasha hat, adorned with intricate gold designs. He is shown pulling on the sleeves of his military uniform, as if ready to lead his troops into battle. With a determined look in his eyes and a sword in hand, Enver embodies the spirit of the Young Turk Revolution and the pan-Turkist movement. This historical watercolor is a testament to the rich and complex history of the Ottoman Empire and the transformative period of the early 20th century. The use of watercolor adds a unique and artistic touch to this depiction of a pivotal figure in Turkish history.
