EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures Princess Alice of Hesse and the Rhine (1843-1878) with her five children in 1877, just over a year before they all succumbed to diphtheria. Seated in the center, Alice tenderly holds her youngest daughter, May, who was born in November 1878. To her left, her eldest daughter, Alix, aged 21, gazes at her mother with a protective expression. Next to Alix are her sons, Ernst Ludwig, aged 17, and 15-year-old Prince Ernst and Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, who are both looking at the camera. The eldest of the siblings, Princess Victoria, aged 23, stands behind her mother, her hand resting on Alice's shoulder. Tragically, the youngest member of the family, May, died on November 16, 1878, from diphtheria. Alice, who had spent weeks nursing her children before coming down with the same illness, passed away on December 14, at the age of just 35. The photograph was taken on the 17th anniversary of her father, Prince Albert's, death. The entire family succumbed to the disease, leaving behind a profound sense of grief and loss. This historical image serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the love that binds families together.
