EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1937, when Great Western Railway (GWR) commissioned a poster to entice travelers to the picturesque coastal town of Newquay in Cornwall. The poster, designed by talented artist Alfred Lambart, showcases the allure of this charming destination. Newquay proudly claimed to possess an extraordinary dry climate and boasted top-notch modern hotels, an exceptional golf course, and invigorating air that promised visitors an unforgettable experience. However, what truly sets Newquay apart is its reputation as Britain's most popular surfing spot. With its pristine beaches and perfect waves, it has become a haven for surf enthusiasts from all over the world. Lambart's artwork beautifully captures the essence of Newquay's appeal. In this particular scene depicted on the poster print, we see individuals donning stylish swimwear of that era while confidently riding surfboards amidst crashing waves. It evokes a sense of adventure and exhilaration that awaits those who choose to visit this idyllic seaside retreat. Alfred Lambart was not only known for his railway posters but also for designing artwork for other prominent railway companies such as London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) and London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS). Additionally, he showcased his artistic talents as a book illustrator. This stunning print serves as a testament to both GWR's promotional efforts during that time period and Lambart's skillful portrayal of Newquay's irresistible charm.
