EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dynamic scene at Kandahar Airfield in 2010. In the foreground, we see an RAF Chinook HC2 (now HC4) Helicopter, a symbol of unwavering support and resilience during combat operations from 2001 to 2014. Behind it stands a Sikorsky HH-60M MEDEVAC Black Hawk Helicopter, ready to provide crucial medical assistance when needed. Kandahar Airfield, located in Afghanistan's Kandahar Province, served as a vital hub for various military forces involved in Operation Enduring Freedom. Known as RAF Kandahar, this base operated aircraft from the RAF, Fleet Air Arm, and Army Air Corps. It played a pivotal role as one end of the "Air Bridge" connecting it with RAF Brize Norton in the UK. The airfield was not only significant for British forces but also served as home to all other ISAF airborne units. With its strategic location just ten miles southeast of Kandahar city, it became Afghanistan's second international airport and one of its largest military bases. This image showcases more than just aircraft; it encapsulates the dedication and cooperation between different armed forces working together under challenging weather conditions typical of this region - hot and dry climate prevailing throughout most parts of Afghanistan. Photographed by SAC Tim Laurence from Armed Forces magazine, this remarkable print immortalizes the bravery and commitment displayed by those who served at Kandahar Airfield during their mission to bring stability to Afghanistan.
