William Edward Ayrton (1847-1908), British physicist, electrical engineer and inventor, 1892
William Edward Ayrton (1847-1908), British physicist, electrical engineer and inventor, 1892. Ayrton studied under Lord Kelvin at Glasgow. In 1873 he was appointed to the first chair in natural philosophy and telegraphy at Imperial Engineering College, Tokyo, and was appointed professor of electrical engineering at the Central Technical College, South Kensington in 1884. Ayrton was the first to advocate power transmission at high voltage, and in collaboration with John Perry he invented electrical measuring instruments including the spiral-spring ammeter and the wattmeter. The ammeter (ampere meter) was one of the first to measure current and voltage reliably. Ayrton and Perry also worked on railway electrification, produced a dynamometer and developed the first electric tricycle. Ayrton worked on the electric searchlight with his second wife Phoebe Marks, who later became famous for her work on the electric arc

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind of William Edward Ayrton, a renowned British physicist, electrical engineer, and inventor. Taken in 1892, it captures Ayrton's intellectual prowess and his significant contributions to the field of science. Ayrton's academic journey began under the tutelage of Lord Kelvin at Glasgow University. His thirst for knowledge led him to be appointed as the first professor of natural philosophy and telegraphy at Imperial Engineering College in Tokyo in 1873. Later on, he became a professor of electrical engineering at Central Technical College in South Kensington. One of Ayrton's groundbreaking achievements was advocating for power transmission at high voltage - an idea that revolutionized electricity distribution systems. Collaborating with John Perry, he also invented essential electrical measuring instruments such as the spiral-spring ammeter and wattmeter. These devices played a crucial role in accurately measuring current and voltage. Moreover, Ayrton delved into various projects alongside his second wife Phoebe Marks (later known for her work on electric arc). Together they worked on developing railway electrification systems while also creating innovative inventions like dynamometers and even pioneering the concept of electric tricycles. This remarkable photograph not only immortalizes William Edward Ayrton but also serves as a testament to his immense impact on scientific progress during this era.
