EDITORS COMMENTS
Imaging back in time to the 1976 SBAC Farnborough Air Show, where the McDonnell Douglas YC-15A 72-1876 (msn CX002), the second prototype, took center stage. First flown in December 1975, this innovative aircraft underwent modifications late in 1976, which included the fitting of a Pratt & Whitney JT8D-209 engine in the left outer nacelle. After the modifications were completed, 1876 took to the skies once more on 4 March 1977. However, its days as a test aircraft were numbered, and it was retired to the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) on 30 August 1979. The YC-15A 72-1876 remained on the AMARC inventory until 15 January 2008. Unfortunately, by March 2012, this historical prototype had been broken up and scrapped. In this photograph, taken during the 1976 Farnborough Air Show, we see the YC-15A 72-1876 in all its glory, showcasing the cutting-edge technology of its time. The YC-15A was an important development in aviation history, and this image serves as a reminder of its significance in the industry.
