EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored illustration, titled "Rose noisette, Rosa noisettaeana, et Rose jaune, Rosa lutea," is a stunning example of botanical art from the 19th century. Created by the skilled hands of Pancrace Bessa and meticulously stipple engraved by Teillard, this illustration is taken from Charles Malo's Histoire des Roses, published in Paris in 1818. The illustration showcases three distinct varieties of roses: Rose noisette, Rosa noisettaeana, Rose jaune, and Rosa lutea. The Rose noisette, or Noisette rose, is depicted in the center, its velvety pink petals unfurling around its golden center. This rose, which was named for its resemblance to the color of roasted nuts, was one of the first roses to be imported from China to Europe in the late 18th century. To the left of the Rose noisette is the Rosa noisettaeana, a white-flowered variety with a similar fragrance and form. Its delicate petals are adorned with intricate veining and a subtle sheen. To the right of the illustration, the Rose jaune, or yellow rose, Rosa lutea, is depicted in all its glory. Its bright yellow petals are arranged in perfect symmetry, their edges slightly ruffled and their centers a deep golden hue. This rose, which was also known as the "Persian rose," was highly prized for its vibrant color and sweet fragrance. This illustration is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the botanical illustrators of the past, who meticulously documented the natural world for future generations to appreciate and learn from. The intricate details of the petals, the delicate veining, and the vibrant colors all come together to create a work of art that is as beautiful as it is informative.
