EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print showcases a remarkable map of South America from 1872, published by Justus Perthes in Gotha, Germany. Justus Perthes, a renowned German publisher born in Rudolstadt in 1749, established his business in Gotha in 1785. In 1814, his son Wilhelm joined the company and laid the foundation for its Geographical Branch by publishing Adolf Stieler's influential "Hand-Atlas" (1817-1823). Collaborating with esteemed German geographers of the time such as Heinrich Berghaus and Christian Gottlieb Reichard, Wilhelm Perthes expanded the reputation of their maps. The business was later passed down to Bernard Wilhelm Perthes (1821-1857), who continued to uphold its legacy until it reached new heights under his guidance. Notably, in 1863, the firm released the Almanach de Gotha - an annual publication featuring statistical data, historical information and genealogy about various countries worldwide. This engraved image captures not only a piece of history but also exemplifies illustrative techniques prevalent during that era. With its retro-styled appeal and Victorian charm, this print evokes nostalgia while providing insights into South America's geographical landscape over a century ago. Displayed proudly within this frame is more than just a map; it represents centuries of expertise and dedication from one family-owned business that left an indelible mark on cartography. This piece from Liszt Collection offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate both artistry and historical significance simultaneously.
