EDITORS COMMENTS
In this portrait, we behold the visage of Marcus Maecilius Flavius Eparchius Avitus, the Western Roman Emperor who ruled from 455 to 456 AD. Avitus, born in Thrace, was a military man who rose through the ranks to claim the imperial throne. His reign was brief but significant, as he marked the transition from the Roman to the Byzantine period in the Western Roman Empire. Avitus is depicted here in the regal attire of a Roman Emperor, wearing a toga and a diadem adorned with pearls and precious stones. The lion, a symbol of imperial power, graces the upper part of his diadem, emphasizing his royal status. The inscription at the bottom of the print reads "AVITVS AVG," signifying that Avitus held the title of Augustus. This portrait is an exquisite copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Bogaert's "De Roomsche Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Bogaert's work, a significant contribution to the study of Roman history, was a comprehensive account of the Roman monarchy, featuring portraits of various Roman Emperors and Caesars. This particular engraving, produced in the 17th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the classical world and the rich history of the Roman Empire. The intricate details of Avitus' portrait, from the folds of his toga to the delicate engraving of the lion emblem, attest to the skill and artistry of the engraver. The portrait serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and the men who ruled it, offering a tangible connection to a time long past.
