Coloured lithograph by M and N Hanhart, after J Brandard, published 1863.
Unlike most colonial units, the West India Regiment was an integral part of the British Regular Army. During the 1850s it adopted a uniform modelled on that of the French Zouaves. This included a red fez wound about by a white turban, a red sleeveless jacket with yellow braiding worn over a long-sleeved white shirt, and dark blue baggy breeches. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a soldier from the 3rd West India Regiment in 1863. The colour lithograph, created by John Brandard and published in the same year, offers a vivid depiction of this unique military unit. Unlike other colonial forces, the West India Regiment was fully integrated into the British Regular Army. Intriguingly, during the 1850s, this regiment adopted a uniform inspired by the French Zouaves. The soldier featured in this image wears a distinctive ensemble consisting of a red fez adorned with a white turban. Over his long-sleeved white shirt, he dons an eye-catching red sleeveless jacket embellished with yellow braiding. Completing his attire are dark blue baggy breeches. The 3rd West India Regiment played an important role within the British Army until its disbandment in 1870. This historical photograph allows us to glimpse into their world and appreciate their unique style and contribution to military history. Displayed at London's National Army Museum, this remarkable piece is now available for all to admire thanks to Fine Art Finder and Bridgeman Images. It serves as both a testament to the diverse nature of Britain's armed forces during that era and as an artistic representation of one soldier's dedication and bravery while serving his country.
