EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by the renowned Bedford Lemere in 1911, showcases the Oceanic House on Cockspur Street in London, serving as the prestigious headquarters of the White Star Line shipping company. The image is a testament to the grandeur and opulence of the era, as evidenced by the intricate decorations put in place to celebrate the upcoming coronation of King George V on June 22nd. At the heart of the scene, the majestic RMS Olympic, the pride of the White Star Line fleet, takes center stage. Having commenced her maiden voyage on June 14th, the Olympic represented the epitome of maritime innovation and luxury. With her sleek design and advanced engineering, she was a marvel of the sea. Despite the looming shadow of tragedy that would later befall her, the Olympic enjoyed a long and distinguished career. However, in September of the same year, she was involved in a collision with the warship Hawke, an unfortunate incident that would come to be known as the "Fleet Review Disaster." Regardless, the Olympic continued to serve the White Star Line faithfully, eventually earning the nickname "Old Reliable." The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, capturing the essence of London's maritime and commercial history. The people in the image, dressed in their finest attire, add a human element to the scene, highlighting the excitement and anticipation surrounding the coronation and the new era that was dawning. The Oceanic House, with its grand façade and the majestic RMS Olympic anchored in the background, stands as a symbol of the White Star Line's commitment to excellence and the spirit of adventure that defined the early 20th century.
