EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage photograph captures a United States Navy Martin P5M-1 Marlin aircraft with the unit code LM and call sign 8, assigned to VP-44, based at Norfolk Naval Air Station in Virginia. The Marlin, specifically the plane with the serial number 127718, is seen in this image from circa 1953. At the time, VP-44 was operating with the older P5M-1 model before receiving their new T-tailed P5M-2s. Subsequently, in late 1959, 127718 was transferred to VP-40. This historic moment was captured at RAF Kai Tak in Hong Kong on 19 December 1959, as the United States Navy aircraft made a stopover during its deployment. The Martin P5M Marlin was a versatile, long-range, twin-engine, turboprop maritime patrol aircraft used extensively by the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard for anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and maritime patrol missions. The Marlin's distinctive T-tail design improved stability and allowed for better visibility during low-level flights. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of United States Navy aviation during the Cold War era, showcasing the Marlin's versatility and the global reach of the United States military.
