EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of marriage between Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont and Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, during their wedding service in St. George's Chapel, Windsor on 27th April 1882. The young couple exudes joy and happiness as they exchange vows in the hallowed grounds of the historic chapel. Princess Helena, dressed in a beautiful white gown with a long train, holds a bouquet of flowers, while Prince Leopold, in his military uniform, gazes lovingly at his bride. Sadly, this marriage was not to last long. Prince Leopold, who was a grandson of Queen Victoria, was diagnosed with haemophilia, a genetic disorder that affects the blood's ability to clot. Tragically, he died as a result of a fall in March 1884, just two years after this wedding. His untimely death at the age of 32 was a great shock to the royal family and the nation. Despite the sad outcome, this image remains a poignant reminder of the love and happiness that once existed between Princess Helena and Prince Leopold. The scene in St. George's Chapel, with its ornate architecture and stained glass windows, adds to the sense of grandeur and importance of the occasion. This photograph provides a glimpse into the lives of the British royalty during the late 19th century, a time of great change and transformation.
