Chateau de Marly, France, 1722 (1882-1884). Marly was built for Louis XIV as a smaller retreat from his grand palace at Versailles. Designed by Jules Hardouin Mansart and Charles le Brun, it was conceived as a hunting lodge only large enough to accommodate the members of the royal hunt. Courtiers were housed in two rows of pavilions flanking the pools of water in front of the chateau. Work began in 1679 and the chateau was completed in 1684.
