EDITORS COMMENTS
Aachen Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Basilica of St. Mary and St. Cecilia, is a remarkable architectural masterpiece located in the western German city of Aachen. One of its most significant treasures is the Palatine Chapel, a Carolingian chapel that serves as the imperial coronation church and the burial place of Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor. The main altar of the Palatine Chapel, commonly referred to as Pala d'Oro (Golden Altar), is a stunning example of early Christian art. Dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, this altarpiece is adorned with intricately designed golden panels that depict various religious scenes. At the center of the altarpiece, Christ is enthroned inside a mandorla, an almond-shaped nimbus, surrounded by the Virgin Mary and St. Michael. The small medallions surrounding the central figure represent the symbols of the Four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The remaining scenes on the altarpiece illustrate the Passion of Christ, including the Last Supper, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The altarpiece is further embellished with figures of angels, animals, and various creatures, as well as decorative elements such as candelabras, eagles, and arch motifs. The Pala d'Oro is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Carolingian Empire and the enduring influence of early Christian art on European culture. Its intricate design and detailed craftsmanship continue to captivate visitors and scholars alike, making it a must-see attraction for anyone interested in history, art, or architecture.
