EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts two exquisite and intriguing mushroom species: the Tawny Funnel Cap (Lepista flaccida, also known as Clitocybe inversa or infundibiliformis) and the Aniseed Toadstool (Clitocybe odora). The Tawny Funnel Cap, with its tawny-brown, funnel-shaped cap and white gills, is a common edible mushroom found in Europe, North America, and Asia. It is also known for its attractive, delicate veil that covers the gills when young, giving it a shimmering appearance. The Aniseed Toadstool, on the other hand, is a small, fragrant, and visually striking mushroom with a cap that ranges from pale brown to cinnamon-brown, and a white stem. Its most distinctive feature is its anise-like aroma, which is reminiscent of licorice or aniseed. This mushroom is also edible and is often used in culinary dishes due to its unique flavor. This beautiful illustration is from Leon Rolland's Guide to Mushrooms from France, Switzerland, and Belgium, published in Paris by Paul Klincksieck in 1910. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and later chromolithographed by Lassus. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print showcase the artists' dedication to capturing the essence and beauty of these fascinating fungi. Mycology, the study of fungi, has long been a source of fascination for scientists, naturalists, and enthusiasts alike, and this print is a testament to the enduring allure of these enigmatic organisms.
