X-36 on Ramp
NASA Dryden Flight Fesearch Center, Edwards California is hosting the X-36 program, as well as providing range support for the flight tests. NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, California originated the X- 36 program and is managing the program in a cooperative effort with the McDonnell Douglas Corporation. MDCs responsibilities include flight preparation and testing, data acquisition and analysis. The X-36 is a small, remotely-piloted jet built by MDC and designed to fly without the traditional tail surfaces common on most aircraft. Two 28 percent scale vehicles will be put through fighter aircraft maneuvers during the scheduled 25 flight program. The goal is to gather data on the performance characteristics, especially agility, of tailless, fighter type aircraft. The lack of vertical tails on the X-36 greatly enhances the stealthy characteristics of the airplane, and holds promise for greater agility than is currently available in existing fighter aircraft. The X-36 is 18 feet long with a 10 foot wingspan, is 3 feet high, and weighs 1, 270 pounds

EDITORS COMMENTS
The X-36, a remarkable feat of engineering and innovation, sits proudly on the ramp at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. This small yet powerful remotely-piloted jet is unlike any other aircraft you may have seen before. Built by McDonnell Douglas Corporation (MDC) as part of a cooperative effort with NASA Ames Research Center, the X-36 is designed to fly without traditional tail surfaces found on most planes. With its sleek and futuristic design, the X-36 aims to push the boundaries of flight performance and agility. Two scaled-down versions of this cutting-edge aircraft will undergo a series of fighter aircraft maneuvers during its 25-flight program. The primary objective is to gather crucial data on its performance characteristics, especially in terms of agility. One notable feature that sets the X-36 apart from conventional fighters is its lack of vertical tails. This unique design not only enhances stealth capabilities but also holds promise for increased maneuverability compared to existing fighter jets. Measuring 18 feet long with a wingspan spanning 10 feet and standing at just 3 feet high, this compact marvel weighs an impressive 1,270 pounds. As it rests confidently on the ramp at NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, one can't help but admire the ingenuity behind this groundbreaking project. The future looks bright for tailless aircraft like the X-36 as they pave the way for advancements in aviation technology and potentially shape new possibilities for aerial combat systems beyond what we currently know today.
