Englands Jackie Sewell shoots against Hungary in 1953
Football - 1953 / 1954 season - England 3 Hungary 6
Englands Jackie Sewell shoots at Hungary goalkeeper Gyula Grosics, under pressure from Mihaly Lantos, at Wembley.
The British press referred to it as the " Match of the Century" - the originators of the game, against the finest team in the world at that time, the Magical Magyars. However Englands were defeated at home for the first time to a side from outside of the British Isles, and were shown to be technically and tactically inferior to the Hungarian side. The result led to a review of the antiquated training and tactics used by the England team, and the subsequent adoption of continental practices at an international and club level in the English game.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, taken during the 1953/1954 football season, England's Jackie Sewell is seen unleashing a powerful shot against Hungary. The intensity of the moment is palpable as Sewell faces off against Hungary goalkeeper Gyula Grosics, with Mihaly Lantos applying relentless pressure from behind. This iconic match at Wembley Stadium was dubbed the "Match of the Century" by the British press, pitting England - the birthplace of football - against the formidable Hungarian team known as the Magical Magyars. However, despite high hopes and national pride on display, England suffered their first-ever defeat at home to a non-British Isles side. The outcome of this historic encounter exposed England's technical and tactical inferiority compared to their Hungarian counterparts. It served as a wake-up call for English football authorities who subsequently initiated an overhaul of outdated training methods and tactics within both international and club levels. This photograph captures not only a significant moment in sporting history but also symbolizes a turning point for English football. As Jackie Sewell takes aim amidst intense opposition, it serves as a reminder that even in defeat lies an opportunity for growth and evolution.
