EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the picturesque village of Boscastle, Cornwall, in July 1913. This print captures a moment frozen in history outside the iconic Wellington Hotel. A magnificent stagecoach takes center stage, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship and elegance of its era. Meet the faces behind this remarkable scene: Daniel Squire, the coach driver exuding confidence as he holds the reins with expertise; Ernest Henry Squire, diligently attending to the horses as an ostler employed at the hotel; Richard Pickard, standing tall with his back turned towards these majestic creatures – a porter at this very establishment. Born in 1869 and departing from this world in 1938, Richard's presence adds depth and significance to this snapshot from yesteryears. Intriguingly positioned foreground right is Luxon Pickard, approximately 17 or 18 years old when captured by photographer Herbert Hughes. His youthful energy juxtaposes against a backdrop that boasts Cornish charm - wagon wheels resting on cobbled streets lined with pedestrians going about their daily routines under a watchful streetlamp. This photograph transports us back to an era where horse-drawn carriages were essential for transportation across hilly landscapes like Boscastle. It serves as a testament to both human ingenuity and natural beauty intertwined harmoniously. Preserved within Royal Cornwall Museum's archives, this image invites us into an enchanting chapter of our past while honoring those who played vital roles within it.
