Valette's most successful impressionist painting, this view of Oxford Road looks towards the city centre. The Refuge Assurance Building (now the Palace hotel) can be seen in the background on the right with its new tower still under construction. The painting shows Edwardian Manchester as a busy and changing industrial city, with pedestrians, horse-drawn and motor vehicles all pushing their way through the thick smog. Oxford Road received favourable press comment when first exhibited in Liverpool in 1910. This probably encouraged the artist to produce further works in the same vein.); © Manchester Art Gallery

Oxford Road, Manchester, 1910
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by Adolphe Valette that offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the bustling streets of Edwardian Manchester. With an impressionistic style, Valette skillfully captures the smog-ridden atmosphere and industrial essence of the city. The artwork depicts Oxford Road from a vantage point looking towards the city center. In the background to the right, we can see the Refuge Assurance building (now known as the Palace Hotel) in its early stages of construction. The railway bridge spans across the street to the left, adding depth and perspective to this vibrant scene. A motor car occupies the foreground on the left side, surrounded by a crowded pavement filled with pedestrians. Onlookers navigate their way through thick smog while horse-drawn carriages and other motor vehicles contribute to an atmosphere of constant movement. Valette's masterful brushwork not only showcases his talent but also highlights his ability to capture fleeting moments in time. "Oxford Road, Manchester" received widespread acclaim when first exhibited in Liverpool in 1910, encouraging Valette to produce more works in this distinctive style. This remarkable piece serves as a historical document that transports viewers back to an era where industry thrived amidst urban development. It invites us to reflect upon how cities evolve over time while reminding us of our shared past and heritage.
