EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Map West Indies and Central America" from the renowned Gotha Atlas, published by Justus Perthes in 1872. Justus Perthes, a German publisher born in Rudolstadt in 1749, established his eponymous business in Gotha in 1785. His son Wilhelm joined him in 1814 and played a pivotal role in developing the Geographical Branch of the company. One of their notable publications was Adolf Stieler's And-Atlas (1817-1823), which enlisted contributions from esteemed German geographers such as Heinrich Berghaus and Karl Spruler. The photograph also sheds light on the historical significance of this map, highlighting its intricate engravement technique that was characteristic of Victorian-era arts and culture. The vintage retro style adds an element of nostalgia to this image, transporting us back to a time when maps were meticulously crafted works of art. It is worth mentioning that Liszt Collection has preserved this piece from history without any commercial intent. The map itself covers regions like Thuringia, Erfurt, Germany (Deutschland), and Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD). Through this photo print, we are reminded not only of Johan Georg Justus Perthes' contribution to cartography but also his lasting legacy as a prominent figure within the publishing industry during his lifetime (1749-1816).
