EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking black-and-white photograph, Prince Andrew of Greece, the fourth son of King George I of Greece, is seen with his eldest child, Princess Margarita, at Baden, Germany, in 1906. Prince Andrew was born on February 10, 1882, in Athens, Greece, and was the eldest son of King George I and Queen Olga. He was a grandnephew of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and a first cousin of King Constantine I of Greece. Prince Andrew married Princess Alice of Battenberg in 1889, and their union produced five children: Prince Philip (later Duke of Edinburgh), Princess Margarita, Prince Christopher, Princess Sophie, and Prince Andrew. This photograph captures a tender moment between father and eldest daughter, with the young Princess Margarita gazing up at her father, who wears a monocle and a serious expression. Prince Andrew served in the Greek military and held various military and political positions throughout his life. He was a colonel in the Greek army and served as the Greek High Commissioner in Egypt from 1911 to 1913. During World War I, he commanded the Greek forces in Macedonia and later served as the Greek Minister to the United States from 1917 to 1921. Prince Andrew and his family were exiled from Greece in 1922, following the defeat of the Greek forces in the Greco-Turkish War. They settled in France and later in the United Kingdom. Princess Margarita married Prince Godofredo of Hohenlohe-Langenburg in 1928, and they had four children. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the personal life of a member of the Greek royal family during a time of political upheaval and exile. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and complex dynastic relationships that have shaped the modern European monarchies.
