Schiaparellis map of Mars, 1882-1888

Schiaparellis map of Mars. This drawing of the two hemispheres of Mars was made by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) between the years 1882 and 1888. He named the seas and continents of Mars, and called the straight surface features channels (mistranslated as canals). He also noticed that the patterns on the surface changed with the Martian seasons. He wrongly assumed this to be due to seasonal changes in vegetation. It is now known that Mars is swept by powerful dust storms which alter the surface features. The accompanying text is in German

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Schiaparelli's map of Mars, meticulously drawn between 1882 and 1888 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli. In this stunning illustration, we are presented with a duo of hemispheres depicting the mysterious red planet in intricate detail. Schiaparelli took it upon himself to name the various seas and continents on Mars, while also identifying straight surface features as channels (later mistranslated as canals). Notably, he observed that these patterns changed alongside Martian seasons but mistakenly attributed it to vegetation changes rather than powerful dust storms. The accompanying text is in German, adding an air of historical significance to this artwork. It serves as a reminder of the scientific discoveries made during the late 19th century when our understanding of space was still evolving. This map provides us with valuable insights into how early astronomers perceived Mars and its geographical features. As we delve into this piece, we are transported back in time to witness an important chapter in planetary science history. The names given to highlands, lowlands, canals, and continents reflect both scientific curiosity and human imagination at work. Through careful observation and research efforts like those undertaken by Schiaparelli over a century ago, our knowledge about Mars has expanded exponentially since then. This exceptional photograph from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate not only the beauty but also the significant contributions made by pioneers like Giovanni Schiaparelli towards unraveling the mysteries of our solar system's neighboring planet - Mars.
